Practically everybody knows that popcorn is one of America’s favorite snacks. But after years of being in this business, we’re suprised that we’re still learning new things about these little kernels nearly every day!

In the spirit of “each one, teach one,” we’d thought we’d share what we’ve learned with our fundraising community so that you can know more about the product that’s helping us all to achieve our goals.

Let’s get started!

Popcorn Fun Fact #1:  POPCORN POPS BEST IN HIGH MOISTURE CLIMATES

There’s some real science behind why popcorn pops. Every kernel has a small water chamber that explodes once it hits 386 degrees and turns the inside of the kernel into the white starchy stuff we all love to eat. That same water chamber will evaporate if the kernels are exposed to arid or dry conditions. That’s why it’s best to keep popcorn kernels in an airtight container and store it in a cool, dry place until you’re ready to pop it.

Popcorn Fun Fact #2:  IT’S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FREEZE POPPED POPCORN

That’s right: placing popped popcorn kernels in temperatures below 32 degrees Faranheit won’t cause the kernels to freeze. That’s because  freezing requires some type of moisture, which is lacking in a kernel once it’s been popped. (See Fun Fact #1 for further explanation). PRO TIP: Want to keep popcorn fresh longer? Store it in the freezer!

Popcorn Fun Fact #3: AMERICANS CONSUME MOST OF THE WORLD’S POPCORN

In fact, Americans make up about 63 percent of the world’s total popcorn consumption each year. That’s about 17 BILLION QUARTS of popcorn popped and easten every year and approximately 38 quarts for every person in the U.S!

Popcorn Fun Fact #4: HOW POPCORN IS GROWN AND WHO’S GROWING IT

Popcorn manufacturing (pre-popped) is grown in 26 states within the U.S. Nebraska is the largest producer. However, all production of popcorn in the U.S. is grown on just 2 percent of available farming land.

Popcorn Fun Fact #4: HOW HEALTHY IS POPCORN?

A cup of lightly salted popcorn contains only 31 calories, making it a much preferable snack option for anyone wishing to control their weight. An equal amount of potato chips, for example, packs a whopping 140 calories! Also, popcorn is naturally gluten-free so it’s a great option for anyone with a wheat allergy.

We hope you’ve enjoyed learning more about popcorn. We’ll be sure to regale our readers with more Fun Facts in the near future. Until then, Happy Selling!
